Food Producers Forum, a provincial non-profit, launched an online survey in the fall of 2022 to collect detailed information about community food production in our province. Over 12 weeks, the online survey collected detailed information from 742 farmers, gardeners, hunters, foragers and fishers in 167 communities across the province.

The 36-page report includes lists and charts showing what kinds of food are being grown and gathered in Newfoundland and Labrador. Here are some interesting findings:

  • In 2022, these 742 survey participants produced 6.2 million pounds of local food.

  • They included 700 gardeners, 650 foragers, 170 raising animals, 310 hunters, 500 fishers.

  • The survey included 100 people who grow or gather food that they sell commercially.

  • Home food producers grew and gathered on average more than 500 pounds of food.

  • Those who hunt, raise animals or fish each produced an average of 375 pounds of food.

The WTF? Survey Report includes 13 key recommendations for improving food security and community health, and has identified the following needs, challenges and opportunities:

  • We need better provincial support and promotion for all levels of food production.

  • Municipal regulations are interfering with local food production & need to be clarified.

  • Community cold storage and root cellars are needed for food preservation.

  • We need local abattoirs to support meat preparation across our province.

  • People say they want workshops, mentorships and online training in food production.

“This survey shows that local communities have the capacity and resources to rebuild food security and community health, if we had better support for local food production.  Before the survey, we didn’t really know how much food was being grown and gathered across our province.” - Dan Rubin, Project Coordinator for Food Producers Forum

The Where’s The Food? Survey has defined a baseline for local food production. We believe that by collecting and sharing this information we can help communities move toward real food security in Newfoundland and Labrador.
