Where's The Food?

Updated: May 22

Our 2022 food producers' survey revealed that NL communities are already producing millions of pounds of local food each year.

The recently-released 36-page survey final report includes lists and charts showing what kinds of food are being grown and gathered in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Here are some interesting findings:

  • 742 survey participants produced 6.2 million pounds of local food.

  • They included 700 gardeners, 650 foragers, 170 raising animals, 310 hunters, 500 fishers.

  • The survey included 100 people who grow or gather food that they sell commercially.

  • Home food producers grew and gathered on average more than 500 pounds of food.

  • Those who hunt, raise animals or fish each produced an average of 375 pounds of food.

Before this survey we did not know how much food was being produced in our province, but now we have a baseline to grow on.
