Time for a Change! Provincial Food Policy Needs Your Support!

Newfoundland and Labrador

With a provincial election coming, Food Producers Forum has created an ad hoc group to develop policy recommendations to better support local food production and real food security.

With some municipalities blocking or penalizing people who want to raise food or keep animals at home, we need a province-wide shift to enshrine home food production as a basic right and part of our local traditions. We need better protection for farms and farmland to protect and expand our province's commercial production of healthy food.

With that in mind, a group led by Former President of the NL Federation of Agriculture Merv Wiseman, Farmer and Nursery Operator Michael Murray who has led a comprehensive analysis of agricultural potential on the Killick Coast, researcher Dr. Nic Fairbridge of MUN's Faculty of Medicine and Founding Chair of Food Producers Forum Dan Rubin have been meeting for the past year to define changes needed to provincial legislation.

The result is a document calling on legislators to make small changes to several acts that will create a positive change in our ability to grow our own food and achieve real food security. Review that document HERE.

You can help us put food on the agenda for the next election. All three provincial parties have now received this document. This is not an issue for partisan debate but a change on which all the parties can agree!

Please join us in publicly asking local candidates whether they are ready to make the right to grow and gather food a priority? It's up to you now.
