How This Year-Round Indoor Farm is Tackling Food Insecurity in N.L.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s winter weather might not present the best opportunities for growing fruits and vegetables, but a Mount Pearl farming business is bringing things inside to tackle food security year-round. Green Farm N.L. launched in early 2020 with the goal of providing accessible and affordable produce for residents in the province. But rather than traditional farming on acres of farmland, the farm uses indoor hydroponics to grow crops all 12 months of the year —

Off-Grid Hydroponics in Yukon
The Yukon Territory has become a centre of innovation in northern gardening. Along with various forms of passive solar greenhouses, they are making significant strides in off grid hydroponics. Read more HERE.

Is Organic Hydroponics Possible?
Hydroponic growers commonly use artificial nutrients to feed their plants. These nutrients are made by isolating salts that contain the Macro and Micronutrients required for healthy plant growth. Because of the chemically derived nature of these nutrients, many growers and customers are trying to find alternatives to these nutrients to make the process more natural or organic. Before continuing, it is worth mentioning that non-organic nutrients are approved by regulators and

Ebb and Flow Systems
In the last article, we talked about three of the more common styles of Hydroponics: NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), DWC (Deep Water Culture) and Aeroponics. We left one more popular style out of that article, a type of hydroponic system called Ebb and Flow. Ebb and flow systems repeatedly flood a grow area with nutrient-laden water, then automatically (passively) drain that water back to the source tank for recirculation. Some Ebb and Flow systems flood an area where plants a

This Hydroponic Farm on Fogo Island Grows Fresh Greens Year Round
This father and son duo are cultivating local veggies on the rocky North Atlantic coast. Read about it HERE.

Types of Hydroponic Systems
Hydroponics is the practice of growing edible and non-edible plants without the use of soil as a growing medium. Traditionally, hydroponics utilizes a fully recirculating system, in which nutrient-laden water is kept in a ‘source’ water tank, that is either hand mixed or mixed by automated, computerized systems that also keep pH at a targeted ideal level. The ‘source’ water is then pumped from the tank into hydroponic structures where the plants here held, then it drains and

What is Hydroponics?
You’ve heard the word before, so what is hydroponics and how does it work? In this blog, we’ll discuss all things hydroponic, from its origins to its potential to feed a future spaceward-bearing civilization! We’ll dive into everything from environmental conditioning to water reduction, environmental impacts and nutrient sourcing. Let’s start by painting a general picture of hydroponics. Hydroponics is most simply defined as the practice of growing both edible and non-edible
